What is Be Active Kids?

Be Active Kids is an innovative, interactive physical activity, nutrition, and food safety curriculum for North Carolina preschoolers ages four and five. The goal of the program is to give young children the tools they need to develop positive physical activity and nutrition habits for a lifetime of good health. Be Active Kids uses colorful characters, interactive hands-on lessons and bright visuals to teach children that physical activity, healthy eating, and food safety can be fun!

The Be Active Kids kit contains the following pieces:

  • An Instructor’s Guide with 19 lesson plans on physical activity, nutrition, or food safety; healthy snack recipes; easy play time ideas; tips for including families in the learning process; and resources
  • A laminated MyPyramid with a variety of food cutouts
  • Laminated Be Active Kids characters with their favorite foods and activities
  • Food photo flash cards
  • Classroom posters
  • Family Newsletters in English and Spanish

Be Active Kids lesson plans are designed to be developmentally appropriate, fun, and interactive for four and five year olds. Each lesson is designed around teaching centers commonly found in preschool classrooms including art, indoor games, make-believe, math, music, outdoor games, and science.

How to Get Involved

Through funding provided by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation and Food Lion, Be Active Kids kits are available for free to any North Carolina child care provider or teacher who works with four or five year olds. Providers and teachers are asked to attend a training session given by a local Be Active Kids Trainer. Over 150 volunteers serve as Be Active Kids Trainers statewide. Be Active Kids curriculum kits are distributed at training sessions where participants learn how to use the kits in the classroom. For information about trainers in your county, contact the Be Active Kids Program Specialist at 919-287-7012 or click here.
